Newton sees year-over-year surge in crime rates

A report from Surrey RCMP says property crimes were up 51 per cent and violent crimes were up 10 per cent in Newton in the first three months of this year.

In the first quarter of this year, Newton has seen a surge in certain crimes compared to the same time last year.

Assaults were up 12 per cent, break and enters up 40 per cent, theft from cars up 79 per cent and mischief up 48 per cent.

Newton is the neighbourhood where 53-year-old hockey mom Julie Paskall was murdered during a robbery in late December of last year.

This week, the city approved a request to add 30 new RCMP officers to the Surrey detachment.
