IN PHOTOS: May the fourth be with you, Star Wars day celebrated

WATCH ABOVE: More than 4,000 people took part in a Star Wars race in Buenos Aires on Saturday night, joined by characters from the movie series, which is expected to release its seventh episode in 2015.

It’s not officially recognized by the federal government or most workplaces, but May 4 marks “Star Wars” Day, a holiday celebrated by fans of George Lucas’ epic science-fiction franchise.

Around the world fans donned Darth Vader, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia costumes to celebrate the occasion.

The semi-official holiday also coincides with the recent announcement of the “Star Wars: Episode VII” cast that will include Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford, from the original franchise, along with Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow.
