EDMONTON – A Grande Prairie man has been arrested in connection with a fatal collision that happened in Edmonton earlier this year.
Ryan Richard Wilneff, 28, was arrested in Grande Prairie on Thursday afternoon. He has been charged with numerous offences, including impaired driving causing death, in relation to a collision on Gateway Blvd. that claimed a man’s life on Jan. 22, 2014.
The collision happened around 2:00 a.m. on a Wednesday morning.
Police say Wilneff was allegedly behind the wheel of a Jeep Wrangler that was heading north on Gateway Blvd. when it veered off the road between 60 and 61 Avenues. Officers say the Jeep knocked down a light standard, continued through a parking lot, where it hit several billboards and trees, before colliding head-on with the wall of a business.
A 28-year-old passenger of the Jeep was killed in the collision.
Police say Wilneff walked away from an Edmonton hospital, where he had been taken with minor injuries following the crash.
Following the collision, Canada-wide warrants were issued for Wilneff’s arrest. He was taken into police custody on Thursday.
Wilneff is now facing charges of impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, possession of a controlled substance, and four counts of breach of probation.
Wilneff has since been returned to Edmonton. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, May 7.
