Arson charge after Saskatoon apartment fire

SASKATOON – A woman is facing an arson charge after a fire at an apartment building in Saskatoon on Wednesday afternoon.

Police were originally called to the building at 1817 22nd Street West around 4:40 p.m. for a report of a disturbance.

Officers arrived to find a fire in a suite in the lower level of the building.

Arriving firefighters encountered heavy smoke in the basement and were able to contain the fire to one suite. The blaze was brought under control in 28 minutes.

Everyone evacuated the building and no injuries were reported.

The suite was heavily damaged and there is smoke damage to the lower level. Damage is estimated at $150,000.

A 53-year-old woman is now facing an arson charge. Her name has not been released.

Fire and arson investigators continue to look into the cause of the fire.
