OTTAWA – The New Democrats want the auditor general to look into the federal government’s Temporary Foreign Workers program.
NDP Leader Tom Mulcair says his party will introduce a motion in the House of Commons today calling for such a probe.
Employment Minister Jason Kenney came under fire Monday over the controversial program, despite issuing a moratorium last week on applications for workers from fast-food restaurants.
Here are some other events expected to take place today on and around Parliament Hill:
– Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz and deputy governor Tiff Macklem put the central bank’s latest monetary policy report under a microscope in front of the Commons finance committee. The same committee will also hear from Parliamentary Budget Officer Jean-Denis Frechette and department officials;
– New Democrat MP Wayne Marston hosts a news conference with Sarah Attia, the wife of Khaled Al-Qazzaz, who has been detained in Egypt without charge for more than nine months;
– Statistics Canada will look way back to 1901 as it releases a study on the living arrangements of children in Canada over the last 110 years;
– With the crisis evolving between Russia and Ukraine, the Commons natural resources committee will hear from witnesses on the opportunities for Canada to contribute to energy security in Ukraine and the rest of Europe;
– Hermitage Capital Management CEO and Russia expert William Browder will call for sanctions against Russian officials who are allegedly complicit in human-rights violations. Browder will also appear at the Commons human-rights committee to discuss the case of Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian accountant and auditor who was arrested and died in prison;
– A petition will be tabled in the Commons calling on the government to change policies so gay and bisexual Canadians can donate blood, organs and tissues;
– And the group “Tous amis de Radio-Canada” launches a White Paper on the Future of the CBC/Radio-Canada.
