WATCH: Friends identify victim in South Okanagan death

NEAR OLIVER, B.C. – A full scale police investigation continued near Oliver Monday.

The Southeast Major Crimes Unit and Penticton RCMP are trying to piece together how a young Alberta man’s body ended up in the Okanagan River.

A passerby saw the body floating in the water and called police.

RCMP and Penticton Search and Rescue recovered the body Friday afternoon approximately 5 km south of the McIntyre Dam.

While police aren’t confirming the man’s identity, Global News has learned that friends are identifying him on social as Edmonton man, Andrew Gangl.

Friends have been posting their condolences online since Saturday.

What’s making the investigation that much harder, is the wide area police need to cover.

A dive team was on scene Monday and scoured the water for clues or the victims belongings.

An autopsy is expected to take place in the next few days.
