Fines for unsafe workplaces going up

WINNIPEG – The Manitoba government is increasing penalties for unsafe workplaces.

A bill now before the legislature would boost the maximum fines under the Workers Compensation Act.

The top fine for workers jumps to $5,000 from $1,500, and, for employers, to $50,000 from $7,500.

The bill would also ban an employer from taking discriminatory action against any worker who exercises their rights under workers compensation law.

The government is also promising to set up a new committee at the Workers Compensation Board to focus on preventing workplace injuries.
