Today marked the first day of Phase One of the public school teachers’ province-wide job action.
That means teachers currently won’t communicate in writing with administrative staff, nor will they formally meet with them.
It also means teachers won’t provide mandatory supervision during school hours, including recess.
Although teachers and the government maintain that the job action won’t affect students or parents, a cross-country run involving 1000 elementary students in Vernon was postponed today, because the School Board had concerns that a lack of teacher volunteers might pose a safety risk for the students.
Pre-arranged teacher volunteer time – such as after school sports coaching — is not supposed to be affected by the job action, and the teachers say they were surprised the event was postponed.
The run will now take place next Wednesday.
