SYDNEY, N.S. – Police in Cape Breton have arrested a man and reopened a mall in Sydney that was locked down following reports that someone had a weapon outside the building.

Officers arrested the man on a street near the Mayflower Mall after they received a report of a man with a weapon on Charlotte Street.

Police spokeswoman Desiree Vassallo says the initial report at the mall came in Tuesday around 10 a.m. and police locked it down.

She says patrol officers, investigators and members of an emergency response team cleared the mall and surrounding area.

Vassallo says officers also reviewed video surveillance to determine if there was a threat to the public.

The man was taken into custody while the investigation continues.
