EDMONTON – The long weekend mixed with warmer temperatures means it’s motorcycle season across the province.

Enthusiasts have eagerly been awaiting the melt of the snow, but  officials are advising all drivers that there are still potential hazards to be aware of.

“Until the roads are properly cleaned and the maintenance is brought up to spec, which is repairing some of the damage that has been incurred over the winter months, it’s extremely dangerous for motorcyclists right now,” said Cpl. Chris Little of the Strathcona RCMP.

Motorcyclist Randy Collins would agree.

“The road conditions in Alberta are terrible, period,” he said, citing the amount of potholes as an example.

Drivers can also be a hazard sometimes.

“You have to be constantly aware of what’s going on,” Collins said. “Because if you’re not, they’ll cut you off, run you off the road, and wave at you like, ‘Sorry, I didn’t see you.'”

Over the weekend, a 24-year-old Calgary man died in hospital after losing control of his motorcycle and hitting a light standard. Police believe speed and loose gravel may have been factors.

In Edmonton, a motorcylist was taken to hospital Monday evening after losing control of his bike near the Anthony Henday and 91 Street.

“They have to look at slowing down,” said Little. “Be very cautious on the edges and the shoulders.”
