Manitoba individuals fined for Saskatchewan safety violations

ESTEVAN, Sask. – Seven people from Manitoba have been fined for violating Saskatchewan workplace safety regulations.

Two occupational health and safety inspectors observed workers at an Estevan worksite working on a roof and an elevating platform on July 14, 2011 not using fall protection equipment.

Dave Nicholson, who operated Dave’s Do It Right Construction in Cypress River, Man., pleaded guilty for failing to ensure workers used a fall protection system where they could fall three metres or more and failing to ensure all work was sufficiently and competently supervised.

Nicholson was fined $2,520 in Estevan provincial court on April 7.

A supervisor for the company, Kevin Sholdice of Cypress River, Man., was fined $1,090 for failing to ensure workers under his direction complied with The Occupational Health and Safety Act along with related regulations and failing to ensure workers used a fall protection system where they could fall three metres or more.

Five workers at the same worksite were fined between $840 and $1,120 each for failing to use a fall protection system at a work area.

According to the Labour Relations and Workplace Safety, falls account for more than 12 per cent of all injuries reported in the construction industry.
