Saskatchewan thirsty for beer but may be losing taste for wine

Although wine sales have been up in Saskatchewan over the past few years, the province still lags behind other provinces. File / Global News

SASKATOON – People in Saskatchewan love their beer but may be losing a taste for wine, according to a report released by Statistics Canada this month.

The agency said people in Saskatchewan spent an average of about $103 per capita this past fiscal year on wine, compared to $332 on beer.

That’s less than half the national average of about $233 for wine.

“Our laid-back lifestyle, I think that we’re really unpretentious, and you know we like to have a good time,” said Megan Toews, an ingredients artisan market salesperson in Saskatoon.

“We’re really into Saskatchewan Roughriders. It would be really weird to see a bunch of guys with purple mouths all hanging and cheering at the game, so beer is like more like camaraderie.”

Although sales of wine, by volume, have increased by 28 per cent in the last half decade, Saskatchewan still comes in dead last in country.

Quebec is first in wine sales at $339 per capita.
