‘It’s a waiting game’: Ice jam caught near Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska

FREDERICTON – The province’s Emergency Measures Organization is still warning those along the St. John River that a 35 km ice mass in the north could cause severe flooding if it begins to move.

EMO sent out an update Saturday morning, saying the ice mass is caught in the Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska area for now.

“However, it’s only a matter of time before it lets go and moves toward Perth-Andover,” EMO said. “It’s just a waiting game for when that jam begins to move again.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

If the ice mass moves, the worry is it will meet another ice jam below Perth-Andover, in Muniac.

Greg MacCallum, Director of NB EMO said Friday if that does happen, there’s a “strong likelihood” the area will see flooding similar to 2012 levels.

“I would suggest if the scenario plays out the way we expect, it will affect communities north of Muniac: Perth-Andover, Tobique First Nation, that area,” MacCullum said. “Based on analysis by hydrologists and professionals and observers, this scenario is playing out.”

EMO is still alerting residents, and says if anyone is in need of assistance or accommodation can go to the Perth-Andover Middle School at 20 Nissen St. or call the Red Cross at 1-800-222-9597. If they opt to stay with friends or family, they are still encouraged to register with the Red Cross.
