Earth is currently in the middle of the Lyrid meteor shower, though it is unclear whether or not this meteor was associated with it. The Lyrids tend to produce only about 20-30 meteors an hour.

On February 15, 2013, a large meteor exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, injuring thousands after a shockwave in the atmosphere blew out buildings and damaged buildings.
