Fall River brothers garner accolades for acting talent

HALIFAX – Two Fall River teens are preparing to head south after being nominated for prestigious youth acting awards.

In a few weeks, brothers Max and Sam Humphreys will be on their way to Los Angeles for the Young Artist Awards. They claimed their spots as finalists ahead of hundreds of other young actors.

“When submissions came out, there was an open call and my mom decided…to submit them,” said 15-year-old Max. “So she put in our demo reels, and we hoped that maybe we’d get a chance to go down, but we didn’t know we’d both go down.

“When we got a call saying we had both been nominated by the board, it was unbelievable.”

The pair are expecting to go to California on May 2 ahead of the May 4 awards show.

“We get to walk a red carpet…and hope our name is called and we get one of those trophies,” said Max.

Sam, who is 13 years old, said he couldn’t believe they had been nominated.

“At first I thought it was a joke because it was April Fools’ Day when my mom told me,” he said.

“I’m very grateful to be nominated because there were probably [hundreds of] people nominated and I was one of 10 in my category.”

The brothers are no strangers to the big screen — Sam has been acting for five years, doing everything from horror to comedy. He has had roles in Hobo with a Shotgun, Call Me Fitz, Roller Town, and Seed, the TV series he is nominated for.

Max, who has been acting for four years, has been in Whatever It Takes, Deep End and most recently The Trailer Park Boys. He was nominated for his role in the drama Spin the Barrel, which was written and directed by Nova Scotian Megan Wennberg.

“The story is about these four kids who are playing Russian roulette and they think they’re playing with a blank, but it’s not a blank and one of the kids almost accidentally gets killed,” he said.

Sam said getting nominated along with his older brother makes the experience even more special.

“It means we can share this as we get older, talk about it with both our kids if we have any,” he said.

Max said it’s part of the next step for the two of them.

“We used to do acting for fun, but we never thought we’d be able to take it to the next level and go pro.”
