LEVIS, Que. – A Quebec shipyard has been awarded a $6.5-million contract by the federal government for refit work on the Canadian Coast Guard ship CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent.
The work will be done at the Quebec City-area operations of Chantier Davie Canada Inc., a sub-contractor to Babcock Canada, an engineering services company.
The work is to be completed on the coast guard ship before its deployment to the Arctic to provide icebreaking and other services, including scientific research and search and rescue support, Fisheries and Oceans Canada said.
The Davie shipyard in Levis, near Quebec City, is Canada’s oldest shipyard, having had different owners and undergoing restructurings over several decades.
Since restarting operations in 2012 under new management, the company has diversified its customer base to include ferries, naval ships, oil and gas customers and industrial fabrication.
