HANTSPORT, N.S. – Hantsport, Nova Scotia, has become the latest historic small town in the province to vote for its own dissolution.

Mayor Robbie Zwicker says the loss of manufacturing companies like Minas Basin Pulp and Paper hit the town’s tax base hard in recent years.

He says with one third of revenues gone, the town didn’t see how it could keep paying for its infrastructure.

The Hantsport town council issued a news release yesterday saying once the town is officially dissolved, it could join one of two neighbouring municipalities in the Annapolis Valley.

Zwicker says the goal would be for the community of about eleven hundred people to have joined another municipality by April 1st of next year.

Hantsport’s decision comes after Bridgetown, the home community of Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil, voted earlier this month to dissolve its municipal status.
