Manjit Panghali’s family awarded damages

The family of a Surrey elementary school teacher who was murdered by her husband eight years ago has been awarded more than $614,000 in damages.

The victim’s family has applied for the assessment on behalf of her daughter Maya, who is now ten years old. She was only three at the time of her mother’s death.

Mukhtiar Panghali was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife Manjit Kaur Panghali and burning her body in 2006.

He was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 15 years. He was also stripped of his teaching licence for 25 years.

The assessment of damages included loss of dependency, loss of household assistance and childcare, loss of guidance, and public guardian fees among others.

At the time of Manjit’s death, the family owned a home and an investment property.

Both homes were sold in 2007; the net equity in the matrimonial home was $264,760.92 while the investment property generated net proceeds of $266,287.24.

Those funds are currently held in trust.
