Cold weather places some Winnipeg homes at risk of flooding

WINNIPEG — Cold weather has prevented ice from breaking up along the Red River and that could mean trouble for some homes in Winnipeg.

“We are in a deep freeze and the melt has basically abated,” said Steve Topping, the city’s executive director of hydrologic forecasting and water management.

The ice is 10 to 20 per cent thicker than normal for this time of year and it hasn’t broken up yet from Winnipeg to Emerson, provincial flood forecasters said Wednesday.

Some flooding in Winnipeg is now expected. Homes in St. Norbert are being urged to close any ring dikes.

Three homes outside of permanent protection will need sandbags.

“It’s not a general flood in the Red River Valley by any stretch of the imagination,” said Steve Ashton, the provincial minister responsible for emergency preparedness.
