Celtic community launches heritage event

MONTREAL – The Montreal Celtic Society unveiled their latest ‘Gathering of the Celtic Societies’ event Monday to encourage youth to embrace their heritage.

“The Celtic society – the Irish, the Scotts, the Welsh and others – have played a major role in contributing to Montreal over its entire history,” explained Kyle Matthews of the Montreal Celtic Society.

Irish immigration to Montreal and Canada tapered off in the early 1970’s.

Most recently, Montreal’s Celtic Society has struggled to entice the next generation to embrace their heritage.

That’s why the group has decided to launch a new project to raise funds for a large event that will happen at Concordia’s John Molson Business School next year – around the same time as Montreal’s 375 anniversary.

“We want to showcase that the Celtic community is an integral part of Montreal to help it grow,” said Matthews.

“It’s going to be a part of it in the future.”

Monday’s launch marks an important first step for the society.

Over 100 representatives of different Celtic societies from across the country gathering to celebrate the start of the event.

“There’s a thirst for Celtic culture,” said Matthews.

“It’s one of the most popular in the world.”
