High water warning continues along Assiniboine River

WINNIPEG – A high water advisory remained in place along part of the Assiniboine River Monday, but the flood risk was low in most of the province, officials said.

An ice jam caused water to rise suddenly in the area of Spruce Woods Provincial Park and forced the closure of Highway 5 on the weekend, but the road reopened Monday. The Portage Diversion, which diverts some water from the Assiniboine north to Lake Manitoba, was put in use to take pressure off the river.

“A high water advisory continues for the Assiniboine River from St-Lazare to Portage la Prairie due to continuing ice jamming and the potential for additional ice jams and associated flooding,” officials said.

Temperatures across the province are expected to remain unseasonably cold, which officials said could increase the risk of ice jams.

The Red River remains within its banks. The waterway has already crested at Grand Forks, N.D., and the crest may reach Emerson Thursday or Friday. In Winnipeg, the Red measured 10.25 feet at James Avenue late Monday afternoon. That’s about half the level at the peak of the 2011 flood, but still enough to swamp riverside walkways at The Forks. Parks Canada announced Monday its pathway along the Red was closed due to high water.

Elsewhere in the province, “a high water advisory is in place for the Whitemud River from Gladstone to Lake Manitoba due to high flows and the potential for ice jams,” officials said Monday.

The river is rising at Gladstone and downstream, and is near bank-full at Gladstone.
