SASKATOON – Property taxes levy and a multi-unit recycling shortfall are on the Saskatoon city council agenda Monday evening.

The purpose of the 2014 property tax levy report is to seek approval for the 2014 mill rate bylaws.

A tax increase of 7.2 percent for the city was approved in 2013 with the average residential property tax increasing $109 in 2014.

Councillors will be asked to approve a $500,000 contingency and direct it be added to the commercial/industrial property class for 2014.

A simplified property tax notice will be going out this year.

Saskatoon’s multi-unit dwelling (MUD) recycling program is expected to be in the red this year.

In 2014, the difference between what is paid to Cosmo Industries and what is collected through utilities is estimated at $215,000.

The city says the shortfall could be funded through a short-term loan from the property realized reserve and repaid using funds from the provincial multi-materials recycling program (MMRP) when available.

Also on the agenda, council will be asked to receive the 2013 report on the 2013-2022 Housing Business Plan.

Councillors will be asked to set a target for 480 new housing units in 2015.

Administration could report to the 2015 business plan and budget meeting regarding funding sources to potentially fund the $750,000 option.
