Vancouver police say no officers were injured in the altercation. The child and suspect were both taken to hospital.

VPD spokesperson Brian Montague says their investigators will be talking to everyone in the apartment building to figure out exactly what happened before and after the officers arrived.

He says it was a very traumatic experience for the officers, especially because a young child was involved.

This is Vancouver’s third homicide of the year.

The Independent Investigations Office has been notified and seven IIO investigators have been deployed to the scene.

Robin Plomp with the IIO says the suspect was armed with a knife when two officers attended the call. The IIO says the suspect did not respond to the officers’ commands to drop a weapon.
