Ecology Action Centre shows support for N.S. energy efficiency bill

HALIFAX – The energy co-ordinator for the Ecology Action Centre says although the Nova Scotia government’s energy efficiency legislation is not what the Liberals promised, she supports the bill.

The Liberals came under fire last week after they introduced legislation that would allow Nova Scotia Power to pass on the costs to customers of running efficiency programs.

Catherine Abreu says that’s contrary to the Liberal campaign promise of making Nova Scotia Power foot the entire bill.

But she says it’s a move she supports.

Abreu says asking Nova Scotia Power to pay for efficiency programs wouldn’t make sense for a business whose job is to keep the lights on.

She says it’s important ratepayers pay the cost of efficiency programs in order to ensure cost competitiveness and accountability.

Abreu says the Ecology Action Centre supports the bill because it serves as a long-term plan that highlights the central role energy efficiency must play in the province’s future.
