Highway 17 closed due to fatal crash involving scooter

A portion of Highway 17 is expected to remain partially blocked off for the rest of the morning while RCMP officers investigate a fatal collision.

Emergency crews were called to Highway 17 near 52nd Street in Tsawassen just after 7 a.m.

Police say a pickup truck was heading south on the highway towards the ferry when it struck a scooter. The scooter is said to be 49cc.

The rider was dragged about 50 metres into a nearby ditch.

The woman, who is believed to be in her late 40s, was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with police.

Investigators are expected to remain at the scene until at least 11:30 a.m.
