UPDATE: Police have now backtracked on Sunday’s statement that human remains were found near Peachland.
“After further forensic investigation we can now confirm the remains are not human and our file has concluded,” said Sgt. Rob Vermeulen.
Police confirmed the remains found were the partial skeleton of a bear.
West Kelowna RCMP are investigating a suspicious death after human remains were found near Peachland on Friday.
Mounties say the grisly discovery was made by a person walking their dog in an area off Trepanier Road.
The cause of death has not been released, however foul play is suspected in the person’s death, according to investigators.
Officers are working with the BC Coroners Service to determine the identity, age, ethnicity and gender of the victim.
The Southeast District Major Crime Unit has taken over the investigation.
