RCMP investigating sudden death near Sussex

COLES ISLAND, N.B. – RCMP are continuing their investigation into a sudden death in the small community of Coles Island, N.B.

RCMP said a woman’s body was found partially submerged in a river late Saturday afternoon. Residents tell Global News access along the bridge over that river was blocked between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m. Saturday night.

“It’s important to preserve any possible evidence that may be at the scene or near the scene,” said Const. Tom White.

People living in the small community said two teenage boys found the body while riding their bicycles near the bridge.

The river was partially ice-covered with some open water.

The teens then went to a nearby gas station to tell an attendant.  The attendant went with the boys to check out the scene and from there, they called the police.

RCMP haven’t released the woman’s identity and will only say she was 57-years-old and from nearby Wickham.

People living near the river say the woman’s body might not have been found if it wasn’t for the boys because the remains were not visible while driving along the bridge.

RCMP are hoping to have more information after an autopsy has been completed.

“All we know is that she was found in that river,” White said. “There’s an autopsy being done and … hopefully that will be able to tell us more the cause of death.”
