Firefighters are tackling one of the first sizeable wildfires of the season in south central B.C.

The flames are burning in the hills above Keremeos, northeast of the junction of Highway 3A and Upper Bench Road.

Five forestry firefighters are on scene along with the Keremeos volunteer fire department. The fire has grown to about ten hectares, but no structures are threatened and it is now contained.

It comes just as the Kamloops Fire Centre is urging extra caution regarding the use of fire to clean up property this weekend. Over the past ten days wildfire management crews have responded to 19 fires in the interior. All of them were caused by people and most of them are runaway grass fires or fires that spread from careless debris burning.

“So we just don’t want people being complacent,” said Kevin Skrepnek with the Provincial Wildfire Coordination Centre. “Certainly this is the season when people typically do a lot of open burning so we just want to make sure they’re being as diligent as possible with that, making sure those fires aren’t getting out of control.”
