EDMONTON – Due to extremely poor weather and road conditions, RCMP are advising against travel on the highways within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Shortly after noon Friday, officers were called to a serious collision on Highway 63 at Mariana Lakes. Two people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a collision involving two semi-trucks and several passenger vehicles.
Around 3:30 p.m., officers responded to another multiple-vehicle collision; this one happened on Secondary Highway 881, at kilometre marker 230. According to RCMP, several people were taken to hospital. However, no one was seriously injured in the collision.
Emergency crews continued to work to clear the roads Friday evening. But given the size of some of the vehicles, specialized tow trucks were being called in to help.
Severe delays are expected in both directions on both major northern Alberta highways.
RCMP are encouraging motorists to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
