CALGARY- Flood season has already started in some parts of Alberta, after a major ice jam north of Calgary clogged the Little Red Deer River.
Water is now rising in a subdivision west of Bowden called Silver Lagoon, trapping some residents in their homes.
“It looks like a big ice jam, a lot of the water has come into the ditches and surrounded the cabins and houses, so we need hip waders,” explained Kirsten Horel as she surveyed the damage.
The ice jam is now so large it’s hard to see the actual river, as chunks of snow have piled up and diverted the water onto land. Highway 587 just off the QEII has been turned into a waterfall, but fortunately water levels have receded on some other area roads.
“It was crossing directly over, pouring over to the other side,” says Tammy Fleming from Alberta Highways. “I imagine these people were quite nervous.”
A number of communities in Alberta are under similar high water level advisories.
