SASKATOON – A Calgary company has been fined after a workplace safety violation in Saskatoon left a worker seriously injured in 2011.

Man Shield Construction was charged after a guardrail system became dislodged on May 17, 2011 at a condo construction site. The wooden 2×4 railing had been secured to the exterior of the building when it became loose and fell five stories, striking the worker.

The company pleaded guilty in Saskatoon provincial court on March 31 of failing to ensure an area at a workplace where a worker could be struck by a falling object was clearly marked by barriers, notices, warning lights or other warning devices.

Man Shield Construction was fined $25,000 along with a $10,000 surcharge. One additional charge against the company was stayed.

Saskatchewan government officials said fatalities and injuries in construction remain among the highest of any industry in the province.
