KELOWNA — A man who played a central role in a deadly stunt that killed one of his best friends has been spared a jail sentence, but he has been hit with a hefty fine.
In June 2011, 24 year-old Jody Rud of Kelowna was riding on the roof of a car travelling down the Bear Creek forest service road in a thrill-seeking escapade known as ‘car surfing’.
The vehicle crashed over an embankment and Rud was killed.
The driver of the car, 25 year old Christopher Bezaire, later pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death.
Bezaire, who is from Saskatchewan, has been fined $5,000 and put on probation for three years.
Ironically, Rud had told friends car surfing was something he always wanted to try, saying it was on his ‘bucket list’.
