March housing starts dive in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – March housing starts in the Saskatoon Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) were less than half as many compared to last year, according to a preliminary report released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) on Tuesday.

Construction on 72 units was started in March 2014 compared to 194 units in March 2013.

Broken down, only four multi-family units and 68 single-detached homes were started in the Bridge City CMA last month.

So far this year, Saskatoon is still in the green with 600 total starts compared to 465 the same time last year.

Saskatchewan’s total urban starts were at 1,206 at the end of March, up slightly from 1,156 in 2013.

CMHC’s preliminary housing starts for Canada last month were at 10,019.
