New Brunswick braces for messy, wet weather

MONCTON – Tuesday’s rainfall warnings for most of New Brunswick have some residents worried about flooding. The province is expecting 20-50 mm of rain and perhaps some thundershowers throughout the day.

A River Watch advisory has been issued by EMO, asking residents to keep on eye on ice deterioration. They say water levels on the Nashwaak and Kennebecasis rivers are a concern and could approach flood stage by Wednesday.

Fredericton’s St. John River was at 1.67 metres Monday. It becomes a concern at 6.5 metres.

There were signs of localized flooding on Monday in some parts of the province. Amirault St. in Dieppe was closed because melting snow and ice had flooded the street.

Some are worried the rain will make things worse.

“If we get a large amount of water coming through the streams, it can pick up a large amount of ice chunks that will float along and could possibly block off a culvert, or at least slow the water down quite a bit,” said Jeff Scott, a general foreman with Moncton Public Works.

Scott Douthwright, a project manager with First On Site, said the disaster restoration company has had a busy year because of the snow and ice. He says there are things homeowners can do to keep their homes dry.

“One of the best things to do is to make sure snow is cleared from your foundation so that way you don’t have any water that could come around any windows. That way if there’s any melting it can drain off away from the house,” he said.

In a release, the City of Moncton says work crews will be on alert if there is any damage to report. They are asking residents to clear storm drains near their properties to reduce the risk of street flooding.
