North End Winnipeg standoff ended with no arrests

WINNIPEG – A standoff on Selkirk Avenue on Sunday morning ended with no arrests, although police, who were investigating a robbery, made arrests nearby.

Winnipeg police blocked Selkirk Avenue between McKenzie and Parr streets at around 11:30 a.m. and the tactical unit removed two residents, who were later found not to be involved in the robbery.

Police were looking for men involved in the robbery of a 24-year-old shortly after 11 a.m. in the 600 block of Selkirk Avenue.

The 24-year-old was approached by four men, one armed with a gun, who tried to rob him but fled when they found he had nothing of value, police said. The 24-year-old wasn’t injured.

Police believe the same four men then physically assaulted and robbed an 18-year-old woman. Her injuries were not life-threatening.

Police arrived in time to see two men fleeing the area and they arrested one of them but the other escaped. The canine unit was called in and tracked a suspect to the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue, where he was arrested.

The 16-year-old and 18-year-old were charged with several robbery-related offences. They’re being held in custody.

Police also recovered a gun.
