One person dies in Hwy 1 crash south of Duncan: Two people injured

One person has died in a crash on Highway 1 on Vancouver Island this morning.

A vehicle slammed into a pole at about 8 a.m., about 4.5 km south of Duncan – at Bench Road.

There were three people in the car, two men and one woman, and all were in their early 20s. The driver was taken by ambulance to Victoria Hospital with life threatening injuries and the woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The other man, a passenger, died at the scene.

Witnesses tell Global News they did not hear any screeching of brakes before the vehicle smashed into the pole, and police are looking at the possibility that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

All three were on their way home to Port Alberni after attending an event in Victoria Saturday night.

Highway 1 was closed for a time but has since re-opened.
