Low-income tenants forced from their homes in a mass eviction are demanding the province do a better job to protect renters.

Social housing advocates rallied on Saturday to mark the one-year anniversary of the eviction from a Surrey apartment building. Before their eviction, the tenants had fought with the owners over what they say were long overdue repairs. The notorious Sahotas who owned the building were slapped with a huge fine, but just last month, tenancy advocates say the province waived the fees, though the family never completed the repairs.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The protesters are demanding the province improve their protection of the current rental stock.
