Premier determined to keep leadership race from affecting government

CALGARY- Alberta’s premier says he doesn’t expect any current cabinet minister to jump into the PC leadership race for at least for several more weeks.

Premier Dave Hancock said the budget needs to be approved in the provincial legislature, and the debate isn’t expected to wrap up until the end of April.

He adds he wants MLAs to focus on that, before making any official announcements.

“Each one of them will have to make their own decision,” said Hancock. “What I have asked and will ask is that anything to do with leadership is kept completely distinct from anything that has to do with government until they actually make the decision to get into the race, and when they make their decision that they take themselves out of government.”

He plans to replace any ministers who do declare their intentions, so that government work is not impacted.
