Keepers of history

As I know I’ve mentioned before, I came to understand the history – that is to say the life, of the Lyric Theatre in Swift Current more from a 100 year commemorative CD, than from, I think, even visiting the venue in person. To prove my point, I insist you listen to the music by local area artists we are grateful to be able to  include in a February feature about community theatres, Second Act.

Artists have a very important role in our community – they are the keepers of history; they are bridges who use music, visual art and story-telling to transport us from the past to where we’ve somehow ended up now when few others were paying attention to the fact we were even moving. That’s why whenever that hard-hitting journalism angel that sits on my right shoulder whispers in my ear, “You are doing too many arts features. Go back to real reporting: more politics, more business news, more tax stories!” I try to hold my ground.

This week, we dug through our archives for old file footage of the Big Dig (I know, bad pun) and the history of Wascana Lake. I grew up just outside Regina and spent a lot of time in Wascana Park as a kid. I remember the geese that seemed to get bolder year after year. Having traveled to many places around the world where green spaces aren’t valued like they are here, I know how unique and important the park is to the province, but I don’t think I could have expressed it quite as well – or as comically, as Jean Freeman.

You will likely remember Jean Freeman from Corner Gas as Fitzy’s grandma. I know her best for her children’s literature. Her 2012 Wascana’s Wild Goose Chase is a smart tribute to the park through a child’s eyes.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The interview I did with Jean about her life and career was relaxed and fun, but also touched on heavy subjects. That’s the thing about artists – no matter the weight of the issue, they are always entertaining. Then again, that’s when we learn best – when we can enjoy and relate to the past. Like I said, artists have an important role – as educators and entertainers. The angel who sits on my left shoulder is often quieter than the one on my right, but validates my belief the same can be said for arts and culture reporters ;).

Have a great weekend!
