WINNIPEG — The hockey parents banned from watching their son play for the next three seasons will have to wait another couple weeks to state their case to Hockey Manitoba.

Leon and Christine Belandiuk’s formal appeal is scheduled to be heard on April 16, Hockey Manitoba executive director Peter Woods said.

The appeal will take place in front of a three-person panel at the Hockey Manitoba offices, Woods said. The Belandiuks will state their case, as will Hockey Winnipeg, which handed down the punishment. There will then be time for questions from the panel.

It won’t take long for the parents to be informed of a final decision, Woods said.

“They would know within probably the next day. They (the panel) would deliberate that evening and then get a written response to that within a week.”

The Belandiuks have complained about how long it’s taken for their appeal to be heard. Woods confirmed they filed the appeal about a month ago, but said this is just how long due process takes. He wouldn’t speculate on the chance of the ban being reduced.

The pair were banned over a fight with opposing coaches after a game between the Selkirk Steelers and River East Royals at a tournament in Fargo in February. The mother went into the opposing locker room, full of seven- and eight-year-old boys, followed by her husband, who witnesses say threw punches at coaches.

Selkirk minor hockey officials said they decided against pressing charges.

The Belandiuks have accused Hockey Winnipeg of using them as scapegoats.
