Child left in hot car in Saanich, found crying and in distress

SAANICH – A three-year-old girl was left in a car in a parking lot on Wednesday, and when she was found by the RCMP she was described as crying and in distress. She had reportedly been in there for about half an hour, when someone spotted her.

The outside temperature was recorded to be 25-degrees Celsius, and although the window was only open a little, it was enough for the responding officer to reach in with his baton and open the car door.

As the child was being removed, the 31-year-old mother, a resident of Victoria, showed up. The young girl was checked over by members of BC Ambulance and was found to be ok. Charges are not being considered at this time, but the child has been left with another family member while the Ministry of Children and Families investigates.

"The public is reminded that leaving children or animals in a locked vehicle in the sun is not appropriate," said RCMP Sgt. Dean Jantzen. "The internal temperature of a vehicle left in the sun can be well beyond the outside temperature."

We will have more on this story on our News Hour Final at 11 p.m.
