Dangerous icicles cause concern around the city

CALGARY- Some homeowners may face unexpected repairs because of all the ice build-up on their property.

The recently freezing and thaw cycle has created giant icicles on many Calgary homes, apartments and businesses. Sunik Roofing has been answering calls to repair frozen downspouts, which have split or broken away from the house.

The weight of the ice can also be too much for some eavestroughs to hold.

“I’ve even seen some this year where they’ve actually collapsed under the pressure from the ice and from the freeze thaw,” says company safety officer Robert Lapierre. “It will literally pull your trough away from your home.”

Melting water running down the side of a stucco home can also get into cracks, and freezing can expand allowing more water behind the wall.

Lapierre adds that ice damming is another concern, which is when ice along the roof edge gets in between the shingles and the roof, separating the layers and damaging the wood.

He also reminds homeowners to check in their attics for ice and water damage.

The ice build-up also creates safety concerns, where icicles are hanging over balconies, sidewalks and driveways.

Emergency officials warn against trying to over extend yourself to try and clear icicles that are out of reach.

“If it’s not really crucial that you go knock them down, it’s probably better to let Mother Nature take its course and let those melt or fall, rather than risk going up at height on a ladder perhaps under winter conditions you may not be used to,” suggests Stuart Brideaux from EMS.

If there is a safety hazard, he recommends putting a warning underneath the area and calling a professional.
