Yorkdale murder: Police looking for 3 persons of interest

WATCH: Toronto Police confirm 3 shooters involved in Yorkdale Mall shooting. Police provided descriptions of all 3 suspects

TORONTO – Police are looking for three people and the owner of a 4-door sedan that may be involved in the murder of Michael Nguyen outside of Yorkdale Mall last March.

Nguyen was leaving Yorkdale Mall with a friend on March 30, 2013 when he was confronted by three men in the west parking lot and shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his friend was injured in the targeted shooting.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

It’s unclear what motivated the brazen murder but Nguyen was a suspected member of the Asian Assassins street gang and Detective Rob North said Monday, the shooter may have been a “rival.”

“I wouldn’t say there’s a specific group, what I can say is that based on Mr. Nguyen’s lifestyle there are many people who would rival him, in his dealings,” North said.

He wouldn’t expand on Nguyen’s ‘dealings’ but admitted they could “possibly” involved drug dealing.

North revealed Monday that a gun was found close to Nguyen’s body. He wouldn’t  say who owned the gun but conceded it had not been fired.

Police are now looking for three persons of interest:

  1.       Male, approximately 25-years-old, five foot ten inches, with a medium build and short hair.
  2.       Male in his 20’s.
  3.       Male, with a medium height and medium to heavy build and in his 20s.

And after reviewing security camera footage from the mall, police are also looking for a silver, four-door Chevrolet Max hatchback.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Toronto Police Homicide Squad or Crime Stoppers.
