SASKATOON – The federal government announced on Friday it is making an investment to help University of Saskatchewan (U of S) researchers test new nanotechnology.
“Our Government understands that nanoscience is a major driver of future innovation and economic growth,” said Brad Trost, MP for Saskatoon-Humboldt.
Nearly $184,000 will help Professor of Mechanical Engineering Qiaoqin Yang and her team buy specially-made equipment that applies nanostructured coatings to surfaces for testing.
These coatings will increase durability of hard-to-reach components and result in cost-savings for industries like biomedical and mining.
The new coating application process will also be tested for commercialization.
If successful, this is expected to boost the U of S’s capacity for future nanoscience research.
Around 25 students will assist in the nanocoating research, resulting in a cadre of experienced personnel in the field.
Nanotechnology refers to the manipulation of atoms and molecules to create new materials.
