TORONTO – Durham Regional Police believe they have found the body of missing Whitby teacher Jeffrey Boucher.

Just before 2:30 p.m. on Saturday police say a body was discovered on the shore of Lake Ontario by a citizen walking near Thickson Road South and Crystal Beach Boulevard.

Police believe it’s the body of Boucher, who has been missing since Jan. 13 after he failed to return from an early-morning jog.

“We attended the location and investigated that discovery. And at this point, based on our investigation, we believe with a fairly high degree of certainty that the male is that of Jeffrey Boucher – our missing runner from Whitby, ” Det. Jeff Kennedy told reporters.

The coroner has been called in and a post-mortem examination has been scheduled to confirm the identity and cause of death.

“At this point investigation becomes a coroner’s investigation. There is nothing suspicious at this point about the discovery of Mr. Boucher or who we believe to be Mr. Boucher. The coroner has yet to make positive identification on who we found,” said Kennedy.

Earlier Saturday morning, a shoe believed to belong to Boucher was found near the Heydenshore Pavilion where a first shoe was found by a passerby on March 11.

Kennedy said he met with Boucher’s family, who wanted to thank the media and the public for their assistance in the case.

The search for Boucher has expanded several times. At first they focused on running trails near his Whitby home. They then expanded it to a 15 kilometre radius around the man’s home. When they came up empty-handed, they expanded the search radius again and combed the Whitby pier, to no avail.

Boucher taught  geography at Bowmanville High School for more than 20 years.
