SPCA investigators seize 127 cats from Dartmouth home

CORRECTION: A report aired on the March 27, 2014 edition of Halifax News Final incorrectly stated three suspects were charged in connection with this case. The SPCA says charges are pending but have not been laid yet.

HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia SPCA made one of its largest seizures in years Wednesday as investigators spent four hours corralling more than 100 cats found in a Dartmouth home.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

A video was recorded during the operation and sent to local media outlets, including Global News.

The SPCA found the cats after responding to a complaint from a neighbour. In total, 127 cats — including two that were pregnant — were removed from the home.

Officials said there was not enough room at the local SPCA for all the cats, and were working with other facilities to find spaces to hold them.

The SPCA says charges are pending against three people under the Animal Protection Act.

The maximum penalty for any charges under the act is six months in jail or up to $10,000 in fines.
