REGINA – You can add antifreeze to the list of recyclable products in Saskatchewan.

Beginning April 1, you’ll be able to pour out used antifreeze at 35 eco-centres around the province.

“Saskatchewan is among the leaders in the country, and sometimes in North America, in recycling products,” said Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff.

It’s believed there are two million litres of used antifreeze generated every year. The province hopes to recycle at least half of that.

“Antifreeze is water soluble, but when you run it through an engine, it ends up picking up contaminants like heavy metals and it becomes toxic,” said Phil Wrubleski, of the Saskatchewan Association for Resource Recovery Corp. (SARRC). “You don’t want to have that material laying around. It’s harmful to wildlife, humans and pets.”

The list of recyclable petroleum products already includes used oil, oil filters and plastic oil containers.
