LETHBRIDGE- Brody Fyke couldn’t believe his name was drawn for a brand new 2014 GMC truck and Arctic Fox 5th Wheel holiday trailer in the annual STARS lottery.But for him and his wife Christina, buying a ticket has never been about hitting the jackpot.
“We support them every year because without STARS I wouldn’t be here,” says Christina Fyke.
Fyke is an award winning motocross racer, when she was just 15 her life was nearly snuffed out when her bike collided with a tree at Maclean Creek Campground.
“I stopped breathing twice, they had to intubate me at the scene,” she remembers. “I ended up breaking my cheek bone, it was ripped right from my cheek. I broke my jaw and both my arms, I was in a coma for three days and in ICU for two weeks.”
Since the accident, her family and now her husband support STARS air ambulance, which is funded by donations.
“They’re directly involved and have that experience, it’s great,” says David Fairbanks from STARS. “For someone who has used STARS to being a grand prize winner, they have that connection so they’ve been supporting us for 10 years.”
For the Fykes, the big prize couldn’t be more fitting. Christina is back on her bike, and the couple often enjoy a weekend in the mountains.
“Oh man, I can’t wait to go camping, I’m just so excited! It’s our passion,” she says.
The Fyke’s say they will continue to support a cause near and dear to their hearts.
“Forever and always because without STARS, I can’t imagine how many lives wouldn’t be saved, there is a chance I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t have met Brody and I wouldn’t have this day.”
