Sylvan Lake evacuees allowed to return home following gas leak

CALGARY – Sylvan Lake residents who were forced from their homes early Saturday morning have been allowed to return home.

A number of homes in the central Alberta community had to be evacuated early Saturday morning after a vehicle crashed into a building.

When fire crews arrived, they discovered the truck had caused significant damage to the structure and severed some natural gas lines.

An ATCO official said crews were working to excavate the pipeline, so they could isolate and stop the leak.

Police had the area blocked off, and asked people to avoid the downtown core.

Shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday, residents were allowed to return home and businesses were able to reopen.

Service to about 20 customers was disrupted for several hours while the repairs were made.
