An important debate about saving

Budget Day starts early, it ends late and there’s very little down time in between.

Reporters love it!

Other than covering elections, Budget Day is the single biggest event of the year for journalists. If you watched our budget coverage on Wednesday, we had four reporters live from three different locations, a live interview with the Premier and stories in between.

Even with all that, we weren’t able to cover everything, nor give proficient analysis on what this year’s provincial budget really means for Saskatchewan taxpayers. Hence, our devotion on this week’s episode of Focus Saskatchewan to the impact of those numbers.

Having said that, what those numbers mean is largely up to interpretation. Opinions weighed on both sides of whether the government should have begun investing in a Futures fund this year – they countered it was more cost effective to continue paying down the debt.

The example of Norway was mentioned several around the issue of saving for the future, but wasn’t elaborated on in our show. I still think it’s worth discussing – here’s an option of how to avoid the boom and bust cycle and we need to consider it.

Will our grandchildren live in the same have-not province we think we’ve left behind – or will they be millionaires? Our wealth is also their wealth; our vote is also theirs as well.
